Troubleshooting Discontinued Fenix LanternsUpdated an hour ago

This guide covers troubleshooting for older Fenix camping lanterns that are no longer sold: the CL20, CL23, CL25R and CL26R. Start with the checks below, then look up your model. If you have a current model, such as the CL26R Pro, see its Manual & Specs article or product page instead.

Start with these checks

  • Remove the plastic insulation disc. Rechargeable lanterns may ship with a disc inside that blocks the battery. Take it out before first use.
  • Test the batteries in another device, or charge or replace them.
  • Insert the batteries in the direction marked in the battery compartment or on the cap.
  • Screw the battery cap down all the way.
  • Use only one O-ring. The extra O-ring in the box is a spare; installing it keeps the lantern from making full contact with the batteries.
  • Lubricate the O-ring with a small amount of silicone grease on a cotton swab.
  • Press and hold the power switch for about half a second. A quick press won't turn it on.

Model-specific notes

  • CL20: Insert the batteries as marked in the battery compartment. If your CL20 (V1) only reaches two of its brightness modes, it needs service (see below).
  • CL23: All batteries go in positive (+) side up.
  • CL25R: The negative (-) end of the battery goes toward the battery cap. The cap is very hard to screw down fully: lubricate the threads lightly with silicone grease, and when you think it's tight, re-grip and tighten it firmly once more.
  • CL26R (original): The negative (-) end of the battery goes toward the battery cap.
