Yes, it can be removed. If you look underneath the headband at the part where it connects in the front and back, you'll notice a small split in the plastic that you can pull the headband through. You can then use it without the top headband and easily re-attach the headband whenever you need it again. Check out our suggestions for how to select an LED headlamp.
